Hello, my name is Alex, and I want to start making themes. Now I am really at the very beginning of all of this. I have never made an image, I don't know a single code. Now I have a few important questions, to begin with, what program(s) do you all use to make themes? How much time/effort should I expect to put into it at the beginning? Can you supply me with a few good tutorials so I can learn? Thank you for taking the time to help me, I hope maybe after lots of practice and a good few months, I may become part of the theming staff.

Program Question:
Since I am on Ubuntu, I use The GIMP, Agave, Firefox's ColorZilla, and the MyBB Theme Manager. Agave is only needed when you're trying to find a good matching color that you can't think of.
I think that is about all. Firefox and GIMP is what I use the most.
Time/Effort Question:
Hmmmm, this is a tough one to answer. Of course since you are new to designing it is going to be rough. Don't overdo it. Work on it for a while, then leave it for a while. So you don't get frustrated.

Now I'm in a bit of a pickle, I have Windows Vista, so I'm sure I can't be using the exact same programs as you, does anyone know of any good Vista programs, that will help me make a theme?
Well, I'm sure The GIMP can be downloaded + installed on Vista. And since Agave isn't used very much, and isn't required, you really don't need it.
So I can make everything with just GIMP?
All your gradients needed, yes, you should be able to.
The forum bit icons (on,off,offlock) sometimes need to be resized using GIMP, or desaturated. But that is no problem.
What a relief
I didn't want to spend time searching for downloads, or cram my hard drive with tons of apps. So all I do is download MyBB, and the rest GIMP, will take care of?

Are you going to install this MyBB test board on a localhost, or online someplace? I would recommend localhost, as it is easier to test themes on.
All you should need is MyBB installed, GIMP, and some various icon packs.

As for Local host, I don't have it install, mind telling me how/where to get it? Also, MyBB installed where?
Since I read you are on Vista, I'm not sure how to do it. On XP you can get EasyPHP and a few other things and install them (not entirely sure here)
Try searching for tutorials about Localhost on Vista on Google. Something has to turn up.
MyBB needs to be installed on your localhost. That's what I meant.
