It doesn't change the look of anything. It is updating your templates to be fully compatible with the newer versions.

This for any themes installed on my forum? or just for default themes mybboard?

Yep. I'm still stuck at "The only way to import the theme is to tell it to skip the custom templates, which defeats the purpose".

Have you tried importing on a fresh installation of MyBB? Something might be wrong with yours, though I can't imagine what.

Tried it on a fresh, installed-just-to-test-this copy of MyBB. Still giving the weird MySQL error.

I don't know what to tell you, I'm stumped. Maybe you should ask on the MyBB community forums, since they know all the MySQL stuff.
